Edgewater Waterfront Family Portraits | Annapolis Family Photographer

These warm, wonderful people, a husband, wife, and two grown children, work together in a family business. They wanted me to capture their beautiful family in portraits to enjoy and share, so I recently visited their lovely Edgewater, Maryland home overlooking the South River. The weather was perfect, the scenery gorgeous, the atmosphere fun and relaxed, and taking these waterfront family portraits was an enjoyable experience.

As a photographer, one of my favorite photo sessions has always been family photography because I know how much history is preserved for future generations with such photographs.  If you’ve ever looked back at family pictures from previous generations in your own family, you will understand what I mean.

I’m also a photographer lucky enough to be based in the beautiful city of Annapolis, Maryland, for most of the year although I do still spend time in Coronado, CA.  Waterfront or beaches around Annapolis and Edgewater work wonderfully well for family photography because outdoor waterfront portraits take advantage of Maryland’s natural beauty. This family’s attractively landscaped yard and beautiful waterfront home on the South River made an ideal setting. Taking family pictures where the members have made so many memories and feel the most comfortable and at ease always makes capturing the beauty that is family simpler.

I wanted to start by photographing the entire family all together against various backgrounds, from the house and landscaping to the river, and then moving on to creating photographs that portray the different family relationships. I took shots of husband and wife, mother and daughter, father and daughter, and brother and sister.

There was a time when family photography meant dressing up and sitting in a formal studio with hot lights shining in your eyes. Everyone dressed in their Sunday best and sat rigidly in traditional poses. There was a time when people didn’t smile for picture. I’m glad things are different today. These days, people tend to want pictures of themselves as they really are in everyday life. Family portraits from fifty or one hundred years ago didn’t capture personalities or family relationships like today’s family portraits.

This Edgewater family chose to wear some neutral khaki and white for some shots and then change to a selection of blue shirts and dresses for others. I think they all came out great and they have a nice selection for framing and sharing.  After we finished taking the family shots, they decided in the spur of the moment to also take some individual headshots they could use for both personal and professional purposes. I’m always glad to add these when people request them.

I thoroughly loved taking these pictures. I hope you enjoy the waterfront family photographs that resulted from our time together that day.
